COMMON OKLAHOMA PESTS
SPIDERS
In Oklahoma, only two spiders, the brown recluse and black widow, are considered dangerous to people. However, tarantulas, jumping spiders, wolf spiders, garden spiders, and numerous other species found in the State are frequently mistaken for venomous spiders. These spiders may be formidable, scary or repulsive to some, but to most people their bite is less harmful than a bee sting.
ANTS
Ants are social insects and most live in colonies or nests in the ground, but may enter homes for food or shelter. An ant colony has a queen, larvae, pupae and many young adults. Ants may contaminate food and can be annoying. Few ants bite. The red harvester ant may bite if provoked and the imported red fire ant inflicts painful bites and stings when disturbed.
FLEAS
Fleas are tiny, resilient parasites that can cause significant problems for both humans and animals in the state. With a warm and humid climate, Oklahoma provides an ideal environment for flea populations to thrive. Many pets reside indoors and fleas have become a year round problem with contamination of both the yard and home.
CRICKETS
The most common cricket species in Oklahoma is the House cricket. House crickets aren't dangerous nor do they pose health risks to humans. However, they are known to cause property damage when left unchecked; this often shows up as damage to clothing, carpets, and other fabric-covered surfaces.
WASPS
Most people have had an unforgettably painful experience with stinging insects so that the sight of such an insect causes fear. In Oklahoma, you are most likely going to see a Yellowjacket, Paper wasp or Mud-dauber. Despite their notorious reputation, wasps are beneficial to man and the “balance of nature” since some species prey on insect pests of our garden and agricultural crops.
